PESA/TESA

TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration)

TESA is a medical procedure designed to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles. This method is commonly employed when there is an absence of sperm in the ejaculate due to conditions such as obstructive azoospermia or when sperm production is impaired. The TESA procedure involves the following steps

  • Local Anesthesia: The testicles are numbed with local anesthesia to minimize discomfort during the procedure.
  • Aspiration: A fine needle is inserted into the testicle, and suction is applied to aspirate small tissue samples.
  • Sperm Retrieval: The collected tissue is examined under a microscope, and viable sperm are isolated for use in assisted reproductive techniques, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

PESA is another technique used to retrieve sperm, but in this case, the sperm is aspirated directly from the epididymis, a structure that stores and transports sperm from the testicles. PESA is typically employed in cases of obstructive azoospermia, where the ducts carrying sperm from the testicles are blocked. The PESA procedure involves the following steps:

  • Local Anesthesia: The scrotum is numbed with local anesthesia to minimize discomfort.
  • Aspiration: A fine needle is inserted into the epididymis through the scrotal skin, and suction is applied to collect sperm.
  • Sperm Retrieval: The collected fluid is examined under a microscope to isolate viable sperm for use in assisted reproductive techniques.

Both TESA and PESA are valuable options for men with certain types of male infertility. The retrieved sperm can be used in conjunction with IVF or ICSI to increase the chances of successful fertilization. These procedures offer hope to couples facing male infertility challenges and are often part of a comprehensive fertility treatment plan. The decision to pursue TESA or PESA should be made in consultation with a fertility specialist based on individual circumstances and diagnostic findings.
