IVF/ICSI

Overview

In Vitro Fertilization, commonly known as IVF, is an assisted reproductive technology that involves combining an egg and sperm outside the body in a laboratory dish. This process is particularly beneficial for individuals or couples facing challenges with natural conception. The IVF procedure typically consists of the following steps:

  • Ovarian Stimulation: Fertility medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
  • Egg Retrieval: Mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries through a minimally invasive procedure.
  • Fertilization: The retrieved eggs are fertilized with sperm in a laboratory dish to create embryos.
  • Embryo Culture: The embryos are cultured and monitored for several days to assess their development.
  • Embryo Transfer: One or more viable embryos are selected and transferred into the woman's uterus, with any additional embryos suitable for freezing.

IVF can be an effective solution for various fertility issues, including tubal factor infertility, male factor infertility, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

ICSI is a specialized technique often used in conjunction with IVF to address male infertility or other conditions that may hinder fertilization. In ICSI, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg to facilitate fertilization. This method is particularly beneficial when there are issues with sperm quality, low sperm count, or previous fertilization failures during standard IVF. ICSI follows the general IVF process, but during the fertilization step, a single sperm is carefully selected and injected into the egg using a microneedle. The subsequent embryo development and transfer steps remain the same as in traditional IVF.

IVF and ICSI have transformed the landscape of reproductive medicine, providing hope and options for individuals or couples facing challenges in achieving pregnancy. The decision to pursue these procedures should be made in consultation with a fertility specialist, who can assess individual circumstances and recommend the most suitable course of action.
